MegNut on the use of Alan Cooper's "PersonA-s" idea in design. In our case, the development of personas helped us recognize that the target audience we'd chosen, web development teams, wasn't as homogenous as we first assumed. Geoffrey Moore similarly writes about "scenarios" (User Scenarios) and "target-customer characterizations" in Crossing The Chasm. See Collaboration Ware for something like a scenario...
