Paul Snively recommends RDF and RQL. Gah. XML and XQuery make my teeth hurt. There's no distinction between data and metadata in XML, so it's hard to come up with an effective model along the lines of the relational algebra or what have you for XML. The more I work with XML, the more I realize that RDF really is the right thing, and RQL is the right query language. Highly recommended.
