article on parsing invalid (as a fallback), including code. I also just tested the 100 most recently updated feeds listed on blo.gs (a weblog tracking site); 14 were not well-formed . Perhaps a bigger problem is the number of sites (like this one, plus all -based blogs) which have no at all.
