Ted Goranson on the history of Out Lining and an encyclopedia of features. Focus on MacOsX products.
Update: new piece on significantly different [Use Pattern]-s.
Jan'04: new piece on the finer points of [User Iterface] work for Out Lining. This is no small matter, my friends, because outliners may be the environment you spend your most creative time in - that time when the Mac is supposed to be special in understanding and supporting... This outline-of-outlines drawer has another pane below which is not shown. It displays an even higher level: all the notebooks of a user. Thus, in one presentation, you can have three layers of outline, more or less integrated.
Mar'04: overview of "legacy" outliners: [In Control], Info Depot, etc. It is to cry...
Jul'04: column on Userland Frontier going Open Source, and Marc Barrot's Active Renderer and Web Outliner. Marc's interested in adding WiKi features: I'm frustrated by Wikis' very limited ways of entering and modifying texts. We (that is Phillip Pearson and I) are currently working on building a more reliable and scalable webOutliner backend based on Apache and PyThon scripts. Once this is done, I'll combine Wiki Word-s and Transclus Ion, add a couple of other wiki-like navigation and indexing features, and we'll come up with a new and I hope more compelling outline based group publishing system.
list of columns - getting into Tinder Box, Mind Mapping, etc.
