Some thoughts on Instant Messaging/IRC that just came to mind:
being interrupted is annoying and breaks your flow. The Fat Client-s need to impute your state (e.g. keyboard use, processor utilization, etc.) and set a flag which signals to your buddies whether it might be a good time to interrupt.
in the meantime, I find it best to initiate a thread in EMail. Then, if it evolves into a longish yet Real Time thread, jump into IM or IRC...
