Random thought : maybe the vituperative nature of the divide is due to both camps pining angrily for a past [Golden Age]. The pack harks back to the days of supposedly -s and low tax rates, while the pack wishes the return of job security and full-employment. Both groups are pissed because they feel they've lost something, and each believes that it's the other's fault. The politics of [Victim Hood]. (Unfortunately neither group displays .)

(And I suspect the chiefs on both sides play this game intentionally and cynically. Hate and fear keep people from thinking, so keeping those buttons pushed makes people easier to manipulate...)
