Greg Costikyan rants about the structure of the Computer Game industry and the need for alternative distribution models. His complaints about rising development costs mirror the Movie Industry: he's right that guys like him will have no fun in that contra-AmatEur world, but it's defeatist to pretend that the alternatives don't exist. Though maybe those alternatives don't have a DayJob paycheck involved. Think of the kid who wins at [Sun Dance] on a movie he spent $300 making. Or think of East Gate.
I wonder whether some sort of Slash Dot rating system could be used to drive interest in the Long Tail of games?
