The [Head Lemur] slags AList envy. One of the unintended consequences of this activity is the notion that we have to count things. Hit's, links, mentions, and googlejuice. If you are selling yourself, then this is probably what you need to pay attention to, but stop bitching when we ask the price.

Then he separately notes that nobody likes to give money to Market Ing Consult Ant-s. Which I think may be the underlying mechanism behind AList-envy. If you're selling what nobody wants to pay for, and you have lots of competition, and your service is hard to distinguish from the competition, then you're in a serious Zero Sum Game, and you're competing on arbitrary criteria like AList membership. "Nobody ever got fired for hiring Clay Shirky as a consultant."
