The new systems, while retaining a panic-button feature, operate around the clock and require no input from the person being cared for. Rather, a sensor will take note of unusual movements - like a person getting up frequently during the night - or the absence of movement, as in the case of a person failing to get up in the morning. "This is the best and least expensive way I've found to give me peace of mind," says Emelie Howard, age 69. She looks after her 93-year-old mother with help from a brother and sister-in-law, and recently installed a monitoring system in her mother's house. "It took the edge off my being worried."
