Larry Brilliant on his plan for responding to a Pandem Ic. Build out team starting from existing Canadian operation ([GPHIN] - the Global Public Health Information Network) which detected SARS and other epidemics and disasters in time to help the world respond and contain them. (Disease Tracking)
This piece expands on the [GPHIN] system. Brilliant want to expand an existing Web Crawler run by the Canadian government. The Global Public Health Intelligence Network monitors about 20,000 Web sites in seven languages, searching for terms that could warn of an Out Break. This information is assessed by a team of experts and passed along to the [World Health Organization]/[WHO]. It is the heart of the [WHO]'s so-called "rumor surveillance" efforts, which have picked up hundreds of global disease outbreaks.
