Jan'2008 update: more big outages, both in December and during the [Mac World] keynote) have re-raised the idea of decentralizing this service. Both and seem like key technologies. ()

Feb28: he thinks replacement needs to be an -compatible clone. to wonder whether the huge amount of traffic coming via their was in a sense a low-quality burden for them (in other words, creating stability problems while not really delivery a whole lot of significant value, but just eye-candy for widget junkies).
