It's frustrating, given my desire to see WiFi be available everywhere to compete with TelCo services, to see the vast majority of [SSID]-s being protected, and thus not Sharing Wifi.
Why do people do this?
to protect their home machines from being hacked (Ms Windows Secur Ity)
to avoid having their email and other traffic get sniffed
to avoid being sued by the RIAA because some "pirated" content through your network (since your whole network generally shows up as a single IP due to NAT).
Bob Frankston notes that every WiFi hub should support multiple [SSID]-s. I don't think that would solve the RIAA issue, but it would cover the others.
How about the FON model?
