My 3-yr-old Canon is suddenly taking all-black pictures. The Canon site gives a generic repair-cost-estimate of $97. It sounds like this happens to lots of people (not specifically Canon users). I wonder if there's any hope of cheaper repair?

Update: free repair baby! As you have noted, it has recently come to our attention that the vendor-supplied [CCD] image sensor used in this Canon digital camera may cause the following malfunction: When the product is used in recording or playback mode, the [LCD] screen and/or electronic viewfinder may exhibit either a distorted image or no image at all. While reports of this malfunction have been rare in the United States, we have determined that it may occur if the product is exposed to hot and humid environments.

Oct26 update: got back the camera. It looks like a totally new unit! Maybe it's a refurb, but it's spotless on the outside, and it works! Now that's some !
