[David J C Mac Kay] examines our total energy usage in the UK, and then tries to provide a similar amount of energy but without using any oil and gas. (Alternative Energy) His book, Sustainable Energy - Without the hot air, is available in draft form as an EBook. He's not a fan of Nuclear Energy, but it sounds like the only technology that has any chance of being significant, based on his calculations.
He has a WebLog. In one post he links to a life cycle analysis (Energy Accounting) database he things looks promising.
