I needed to replace the [Dimmer Switch] in the bathroom (HowTo). I had bought a switch that could be single-pole or 3-way. It had 4 wires in the back. One clearly labelled to be unnecessary in.a single-pole use. That left a red, a green, and a black. But in the wall there were only 2 wires: a red, and a bluish-green. All the instructions I could find anywhere (with the switch, online) assumed there would be 3 wires in the wall.
Finally I assumed I needed 2 active wires, so I
skipped the green/ground
matched red to red
connected the remaining wires on each side
