Eric Norlin interviews Microsoft's Charles Fitzgerald on digital identities. In order for this federation to be easy to implement, we need a model that will abstract today's security approaches and apply the XML-based web services model of communications between systems. This model, proposed just a couple of weeks ago by Microsoft and IBM and Verisign, is called WS-Security. It is, simply put, a model for attaching security information to SOAP messages.
