(2003-01-16) Tracking Serial Killer Emap

Serial Killer MauryTravis was tracked by printing out an Expedia map showing the location of a victim's body, and sending it to a journalist. He was the only Expedia user to focus on that map area that day, which led to his IP number, which World Com could trace back to his account for that day/time. (Travis later, ahem, hanged himself in his cell with his hands behind his back.)

Barely-related, the RIAA has forced (under DMCA) Verizon to trace the identity of an ISP customer who's been sharing music. Welcome to the Transparent Society.
