Clay Shirky points to Buddy Space, a Jabber-based Instant Messaging system. Mentions InterOp with other systems based on Jabber's gateway approach, but in my experience that's been blocked by the other vendors (at least AIM), though maybe I'm wrong about that...

Buddy Space was noted last July on the Teledyn blog.
