(2005-06-28) Rushkoff Guru

Douglas Rushkoff on the danger of following a Guru. The path of devotion offered by gurus is also a natural fit for those of us who are fed up with the relativistic haze of a world where there are no discernible rules, yet equally disillusioned by institutional religions that appear to have sold out to American consumerism. The guru offers absolutism. Certainty. A point of focus.

Update: I was thinking this "comfort" model might explain resistance to the Evolution model, but then was reminded about the surveys of widespread US belief in Monotheism. Which makes me feel like it's silly to try and spread Evolution without solving the Monotheism problem at the same time. Ugh.
