(2006-10-19) Military Commissions Act
George W Bush signed the Military Commissions Act for Dealing With Terrorism, allowing him to classify anyone as an Enemy Combatant not entitled to Habeas Corpus. There is also no limit on the duration of this power. Also confirms the power to Torture. See Roll Call votes for the House Of Representatives and the US Senate.
The same day he signed the John Warner Defense Authorization Act, which allows the President to declare a "public emergency" and station troops anywhere in America and take control of state-based National Guard units without the consent of the governor or local authorities, in order to "suppress public disorder." The end of Posse Comitatus (or more the Insurrection Act)?
