(2006-10-31) Google Buys Jotspot

Google bought JotSpot! So now Google is in the WikiFarm business! Time to get moving on that Portal Collaboration Roadmap! (I was just reading about Google Spreadsheet and thinking "huge numbers of people use a Spreadsheet just for a table of data, and they'd be much happier if that were in something like a wiki rather than a standalone document".)

Ross Mayfield (SocialText) http://ross.typepad.com/blog/2006/10/google_acquires.html |comments Talking about JotSpot's integration into other page types, Ward Cunningham said I foresee the unification of wiki and programming. Wiki was founded on principles I had already seen work in Agile/Extreme Programming. Once the technology catches up it will all be one thing.

They stopped accepting new users while transitioning to the Google Infrastructure.

Jul'2007: it sounds like they'll be re-opened soon.

Sept04'2007: maybe relaunch at Office2 conference?

  • nope but coming-soon whispers continue

Nov14'2007: still waiting anticipating integration with GoogleApps. My old thoughts on this are at Portal Collaboration Roadmap.

Nov28'2007: in a broader critique of Google's Fo Cus, they note Kathleen Reidy, also an analyst for The 451 Group, said that not only is a wiki project no longer in the works at Google, but that former JotSpot employees are currently working on altogether different projects.

Dec01'2007: A service based on JotSpot will replace Google Page Creator. "Scheduled to be launched sometime next year (2008), Google Sites will expand upon the Google Page Creator already offered within Apps. Based on JotSpot collaboration tools, Sites will allow business to set up intranets, project management tracking, customer extranets, and any number of custom sites based on multi-user collaboration."
