(2006-12-19) Bray Mingus
He can't track down the Joni Mitchell album. I think it was just called Mingus. Jaco Pastorius played on that same album. I remember WRVR playing it all the time back when it came out (before they slid into the "all Joe Sample and the Crusaders" format).
- update: by "which I can’t seem to find at the moment" I suspect he literally means "can't find the physical disk in his collection", not "can't remember the name"
- update: the "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" single is also available on Jaco's "Punk Jazz" anthology
The Mingus Big Band used to play around the corner at Fez (under Time Cafe) (I saw them there - Live Performance). Now they play uptown at Iridium. (Randy Becker and Ronnie Cuber are members. Cuber played baritone sax on the awesome "Moanin'".)
- update: actually Pepper Adams played Moanin' on its original "Blues & Roots" record in 1960, and Cuber played it on the 1993 "Nostalgia in Times Square" Mingus Big Band album.
