(2007-08-01) Evslin International Roaming

Tom Evslin has some bits on International Roaming.

  • the basics, and the joy of juggling SIM cards

  • services like Roam4 Free and Cellular Abroad that sell a single SIM that can be used cheaply in many countries. You need unlocked phone for that. He also notes potential for using VoIP Over [[WiFi]] if your Mobile supports it (and there's a WiFi signal around).

  • you aren't violating Copy Right law by unlocking your Mobile. Note that you still may be bound by whatever contract you signed with your provider, especially as far as cancellation fees are concerned. You may invalidate your warranty by hacking your phone. You may be in violation of your carrier's Terms Of Service (but you may not care if you aren't going to use said carrier's overpriced service). You !MAY have consented to a shrinkwrap contract saying you wouldn't hack when you opened the box your phone came in (this blog doesn't give legal advice).

Argh.
