The concept of an "AuthorPlatform" seems driven by the desire of Book Publishing people to let authors do their own (Viral) Marketing, or even moreso to have an existing level of success as defined by Social Network size. Which seems like having one less reason to deal with a publisher in the first place... (creating more of an opportunity for Barnes And Noble to take on that role in the print-book format/channel).
