(2008-08-18) Bray Pragmatic Rest

Tim Bray makes some pragmatic points about using ReST.

  • just getting HTTP right (e.g. HttpCaching) gives you lots of benefits

  • maybe Web Cookie-s aren't quite evil

  • a Messaging mentality is key

  • I'm pretty convinced that Atom Pub would work about as well if you overloaded the U and D in CRUD on HttpPost, carefully and respectfully. Having said that, I'm beginning to believe that the theoretical benefits of HttpPut will work out pretty well in practice, and I'm glad that Atom Pub now gives PUT something useful to do.
