Phil Windley asks why RSS and PubSub didn't create an Open Twitter years ago.

I Commented: I suspect that SMS provided, along with novelty, a rationalization for the message-size-limit which drove the cultural acceptance of tiny posts. If you had tried to launch a microblogging service without SMS, I think you would have had too much resistance.
