(2009-08-26) N810 Gps

Having traded my rental car for a loaner (Moving To Chicago), I lost use of the GPS. (My crummy old one is on the moving truck.)

So I checked out the Map app on my Nokia N810.

  • really slow to "find" satellites to get started

  • can show you locations, search Points Of Interest, etc. but doesn't give any navigation.

  • activated 7-day free trial of Way Finder. Yikes, 12months for North America costs $110. One month costs $14 - maybe I'll do that as a bridge until I buy my AutoMobile with the built-in GPS.

That trial seemed to run out awfully fast.

Luckily I had gotten my old Nav Cam GPS unpacked, so I can use that. Even that has occasional delays in getting a GPS satellite lock, but not nearly as bad as the N810. On the other hand, the software is incredibly lame. It doesn't even do street-number-specific routing out here in the sticks.

(Jihi is surprised to discover that GPS maps (Meta Data) are sometimes inaccurate. This came up on recent Rental Car where2 systems as well.)
