(2009-11-24) Dumping Paint
So I inherited ~30 buckets of house paint (Barrington Il), and we've changed the colors of everything inside, plus this stuff is rusting away... so I'd like to get rid of it.
Groot (local Waste Management guys) has a brochure for the Village Of Barrington referring me to the Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County (SWACC) (with an inaccurate phone number). Plus I realize I'm not Cook County, I'm Lake County.
So I go to Lake County's site and find that latex paint isn't considered hazardous. So
-
you can throw it out in the Garbage after you dry it out (with sand, kitty litter, shredded newspaper).
-
you can take it to a ReCycling center that handles it. The Earth Paints Collection site leads me to local hardware stores, who I call. They will charge me $2.50 per gallon can, regardless of how much is inside.
I go back and call the Cook County agency, and get the same info.
Nov25: took the bulk of it for ReCycling, costing me $140. Couple empty cans will go in Garbage handling, nastier stuff still to be figured out...
