(2012-05-01) Amanda Palmer Kickstarter Campaign
Amanda Palmer launched a new KickStarter campaign yesterday to raise $100K to support the new album she just finished recording: since i'm now without a giant label to front the gazillions of dollars that it always takes to manufacture and promote a record this big, i'm coming to you to gather funds so that i have the capital to put it out with a huge fucking bang. i think kickstarter and other crowdfunding platforms like this are the BEST way to put out music right now - no label, no rules, no fuss, no muss. just us, the music, and the art. i'm also making sure EVERY PRODUCT sold through this kickstarter is unique to this campaign, to reward all of you who KNEW ME WHEN and were willing to support me from Day One.
She raised the $100k in less than a day; $379k in 2 days.
May05: past $500k.
May12: at $641k.
May22: good details on where the money goes. (She's now over $800k.) She fronted $250k before the campaign started, and will probably end up with less than $100k. (Hmm, so what would have happened if she had only hit the $100k target?) A LOT of our income for the next year WON’T COME from this kickstarter. it’ll come gradually, over the following year: from the touring show, from the merchandise we sell on the road, from money we get in donations when i make the tracks available online, from the money i get from iTunes from the people who are sometimes lazy (like me), and so forth. it’ll be a slow burn, like it always is.
Sept13: many have become upset at the fact that she's soliciting ~8 unpaid musicians for each of her tour shows, saving $35k. Steve Albini has questioned how she spends her money.
- Sept19 update: she's started paying all of them.
