(2013-04-24) Ipad Email And Update Woes

So The Wife's IPad seems to be having intermittent problems where I Mail stops sending/receiving, both from her corporate Lotus Notes account and GMail. This has happened in the office, here at home, and in hotels. (Brower/etc works fine so it's not a network issue.)

Today she has unsent email in both Notes and GMail. Some messages went out prior to 10am, a number of messages she wrote since then have not. Her Notes Sent box hasn't been updated in over a week.

Tried a restart, which seems to come up a lot. Now have updated Inbox but no change in Sent box.

Decided to let it update to IOS 6.1.2.

(Skipped I Cloud.)

Then we had to log in with Apple I D.

Then it said we need to "update Apple ID" to be an email address. (Odd that this hasn't come up earlier, since this requirement happened over a year back...)

But it wouldn't accept her gmail address, as it's already associated with the account! This seems to be an old horrible bug! So I guess I need to use a different email address, and them merge them in the account.

So I tried a hack of using her gmail address but with a +apple stuck in before the @, since I know those get treated as the same account by gmail.

It took 5min to accept this!

Then it asked me to Register with Apple!

And somehow it did something with I Cloud anyway.

Now GMail shows up twice in her list of I Mail accounts.

Sent another message from her GMail to me (at 2:17pm). (Update, came through within a couple minutes. Though earlier message she said she sent has not appeared.)

Sent test message from her Notes to me (at 2:20pm). As of 2:25 it hasn't appeared.

Went into Settings and deleted the new/dupe GMail account. (2:26)

Back into I Mail. Notes/Sent folder seems to have updated a bit, now up to today 1:19pm (she did some other sending with her Blackberry when she realized the IPad wasn't working). Still an hour behind, and test message sent 2:20pm still hasn't been received. (The missing messages don't appear in Sent, they don't appear in Drafts. Anywhere else to look?)

As of 3:15pm, no change.

At 3:45pm the test message finally came. The other missed messages never appeared.

At 3:50 changed Settings to synch only last Month of mail (for Notes) - it had been set to no-limit which probably was not a good idea....

Update: those missing emails never appeared. Very bad failure.

May05'2013: now that she's back from a trip, trying to combine the Apple I Ds. Plus even before this mess started she said she had the "wrong" contacts in her IPad...

• Went to place for "managing" your Apple I D. Found couple potentially useful docs.

• Trying to log in with her non-email original Apple I D (JihiKim). Doesn't seem to be working. Ask for email reset, not getting the email (not at GMail, not at biz Lotus Notes).

• Try logging in with her pure GMail address. Neither supposed password for that works, either. Send email reminder. This one appears. Reset email. Log in.

• Shows that this email is "Apple ID and Primary Email Address". There's no "Alternate Email Addresses" listed. Trying adding that ..+apple@gmail.com address. Get "Email address is already verified for another Apple ID."

• One doc has a specific section about "How to add an additional email address that is already associated with another Apple ID". But the case covered works only where that email is an "additional" on that other Apple I D, not the primary for the Apple I D.

• So one big question is: is her core-gmail Apple I D effectively the same as the original email-less Apple I D? All her data seems to be there (in the gmail-associated Apple I D), so that's promising. Log in with the ..+apple@.. account and it doesn't have that info.

So, conclude that should just try to get the core-gmail address associated with the IPad. Hmm, how?

• Go to Settings/Mail no I already have that (+apple) email account removed, so that's not it.

• Settings/I Cloud shows the +apple account but has no way to change it. Though there's a big "Delete Account" button at the bottom. Will consider that...

• Thread says to use Settings/ITunes/AppStores. It shows jihikim with no email address! (One of the joys in ID juggling is wondering whether it's case-sensitive in various situations.) Try logging in on the web with that all-lower-case ID, fail, try email reset, never get anything.

• Click on that ID in the IPad, one of the options is "View Apple ID", click that, but none of the passwords work.

• Decide to "Sign Out" to log in with the core-gmail ID.

• It accepts password, notes "this Apple ID has not yet been used in the ITunes Store", so click Review button. All the data I saw on-web is there. But there are some missing fields, so have to fill those in. Then it says I'm good and dumps me into the AppStore.

• Go back into Settings, everything looks good. Send test emails to/from various accounts, everything is working.

• Contacts in her I Mail seem fine, she'll have to check to confirm.

• Face Time contacts? Can't figure out what she's signed in as for Face Time. Have to go out to Settings. Ah, it's associated with her non-email Apple I D and the +apple gmail. Have to log out and back in with her core-gmail Apple I D again.

• I Cloud on IPad still associated with +apple account. Time to hit that Delete button? Yep, do it, then it prompts me to log in with core-gmail ID, so do that, and all seems fine. (Not using I Cloud at all yet anyway...)

May08 update:

• discovered some other apps still tied to +apple account. Rather annoying.
• worse: it seems like anything she installed under the "old" ID can't get updated, but has to be re-installed.
