(2021-09-20) Organization Legos: The State Of DAO Tooling

Organization Legos: The State of DAO Tooling. DAO Operations is a budding crypto vertical that remains underserved.

Modularity allows DAOs to install plug-ins like DAOHaus Boosts and Gnosis’ Zodiac suite without needing to foresee the need for them when deploying the DAO. Open standards allow for anybody, as long as their code adheres to a shared interface, to build their own “expansion packs” as needs emerge within their own communities.

Organization Design At a certain headcount, monolithic group chats organically break into working groups or functional committees.*

Leaders are often voted in by the DAO.

Many responsibilities overlap with those of traditional orgs, the core difference (& value prop) in DAOs is that opportunities to contribute are open.

Over time, members can grow their reputation within the DAO by earning "XP" & trust with each contribution.

In the future this XP can be aggregated into a decentralized identity protocol like @identityindex such that the individual take their "on-chain resume" with them into different communities.

Compensation Payment distribution infra more mature relative to tools in other ops areas. Payments can be streamed (@sablierHQ, @superfluid_hq), bulk-distributed (@tryrollhq, disperse.app), voted on (@gnosisSafe) Even ESOPs, thanks to DeFi*

How different types of contributions should be rewarded is less clear.. @sourcecred quantifies & assigns "cred" to activities like Github PRs, Discourse posts @govrnhq works with individual DAOs to assign weight to different types of contribs. here's @metagammadelta 's

What’s nice about @GovrnHQ's model is that you get standardisation for value creation within the context of the DAO.

Bottom-up models like Govrn's can plug into things like rewards distribution, bounties creation, and novel voting mechanics eg. @gitcoin's Quadratic Trust

Peer-based compensation tool @coordinape is built on the premise that contributors of a working group themselves know best who has created the most value. Knowledge comes from the edges. After each work "epoch", WG members distribute rewards to peers at their own discretion.

Frontends & Analytics With the proliferation of DAOs also comes the need for human-readable DAO activity. An "Etherscan for DAOs"

Frameworks Unlike monolithic, rigid first-generation frameworks, newer DAO frameworks (+ updated version of OG ones) will embrace modularity to better accommodate the widely varying and ever-evolving needs of communities.*

Tribute is an extensible version of Moloch built on upgradeable adapters & extensions @nowdaoit has a whole marketplace of Moloch plugins
