Client Side Include

instead of using a Server Side Include (SSI) to assemble/render a Web Page, let the Web Browser (or Fat Client) make multiple calls to more granular service to get the pieces, and put it together itself.

JavaScript-based Portlet-s and Widget-s are one approach.

AJAX is another.
