use of power plant to generate both heat and electricity - aka [CHP]
typically used locally by a building/neighborhood, to complement/replace energy provided by the Energy Industry (Electric Utility)
in some cases the local group can actually sell electricity back to the utility during times when it has excess - a small player in the World Energy Grid
