Undo is an interaction technique which is implemented in many computer programs. It erases the last change done to the document, reverting it to an older state. In some more advanced programs, such as graphic processing, undo will negate the last command done to the file being edited. With the possibility of undo, users can explore and work without fear of making mistakes, because they can easily be undone. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Undo

This is a copy of an email I just received from Number Two Son's fifth-grade (Elementary School) teacher - this is Barrington Il's Public School TAG program. I think it captures the awesomeness of the Self Contained program there... (see also 2009-10-15-BarringtonTag) (more)

Cory Doctorow reviews Douglas Coupland's new J Pod novel. In J Pod, the little brothers and sisters of Generation X slave away at a thinly-disguised EA Games in Vancouver, where marketdroids reward their slavish labor by heaping menial tasks on them, and perverting the games they make so that they're not even cool. None of these people will be a software millionaire. They are people who work sweatshop hours for lousy wages, burn out young, and go nowhere. They use Google and EBay to scour the globe for anything to make their lives Meaningful. They don't find it.

Suicide is the act of intentionally causing one's own death.[6] Mental disorders, including depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, personality disorders, and substance abuse—including alcoholism and the use of benzodiazepines—are risk factors.[2][4][7] Some suicides are impulsive acts due to stress, such as from financial difficulties, troubles with relationships, or bullying.[2][8] Those who have previously attempted suicide are at a higher risk for future attempts.[2] Effective suicide prevention efforts include limiting access to methods of suicide—such as firearms, drugs, and poisons; treating mental disorders and substance misuse; proper media reporting of suicide; and improving economic conditions.[2][9] Even though crisis hotlines are common, there is little evidence for their effectiveness. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suicide (more)

Jorge Aranda notes A critique from Alistair Cockburn on how the Agile Software Development movement is under attack from Taylorism led me to an essay by Dave West on the philosophical incompatibilities between Lean Development and agile techniques, and this in turn led me to finally give a read to Peter Naur’s 1985 text, “Programming as Theory Building.”.. Naur’s programmer’s theories are essentially Mental Models in the sense I (and many others before me) present them, and both he and I claim that the overarching goal of a software development organization is to build those models (or theories) during the life of the project. I could actually restate my thesis contributions as extensions to Naur’s sketch in two ways: first, I explore what I think is the main challenge that software team members find today: to build consistent mental models (or in the terms of the thesis, to develop a shared understanding (Shared Language)) of the world, among potentially large groups of people, in the face of abundant, shifting, and tacit information, and unclear or exploratory goals. Second, I outline some attributes of team interaction (Team Work) that make such a challenge easier to overcome. (more)

ECMAScript (/ˈɛkməskrɪpt/) (or ES)[1] is a general-purpose programming language, standardised by Ecma International according to the document ECMA-262. It is a JavaScript standard meant to ensure the interoperability of web pages across different web browsers.[2] ECMAScript is commonly used for client-side scripting on the World Wide Web, and it is increasingly being used for writing server applications and services using Node.js. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ECMAScript

Solidity is an object-oriented programming language for writing smart contracts.[1] It is used for implementing smart contracts[2] on various blockchain platforms, most notably, Ethereum.[3] It was developed by Christian Reitwiessner, Alex Beregszaszi, and several former Ethereum core contributors to enable writing smart contracts on blockchain platforms such as Ethereum.[4] The programs compiled by the Solidity are intended to be run on Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solidity (more)

The FDA, having observed and accepted conclusive evidence that booster shots are highly effective, has rejected allowing people to get those booster shots unless they are over the age of 65, are immunocompromised or high risk, or are willing to lie on a form. The CDC will probably concur. (more)
