Zvi Mowshowitz: Repeal the Jones Act of 1920. Balsa Policy Institute chose as its first mission to lay groundwork for the potential repeal, or partial repeal, of section 27 of the Jones Act of 1920. I believe that this is an important cause both for its practical and symbolic impacts. The Jones Act is the ultimate embodiment of our failures as a nation. (more)

Zvi Mowshowitz: AI #88: Thanks for the Memos. Following up on the Biden Executive Order on AI, the White House has now issued an extensive memo outlining its AI strategy. The main focus is on government adaptation and encouraging innovation and competitiveness, but there’s also sections on safety and international governance. (more)

Zvi Mowshowitz: Monthly Roundup #24: November 2024. A paper via MR says that across seven studies ‘attractiveness discrimination’ goes undetected because people lack the ability to do so, not because they think it is fine, and warn that interventions to increase salience of the issue would likely decrease detection of gender and race discrimination. (more)

Zvi Mowshowitz: The Big Nonprofits Post. There are lots of great charitable giving opportunities out there right now. (Attractive Charities) (more)

Zvi Mowshowitz: Occupational Licensing Roundup #1. We’re coming out firmly against it. (more)

Zvi Mowshowitz: AI #94: Not Now, Google. At this point, we can confidently say that no, capabilities are not hitting a wall. Capacity density, how much you can pack into a given space, is way up and rising rapidly, and we are starting to figure out how to use it. Not only did we get o1 and o1 pro and also Sora and other upgrades from OpenAI, we also got Gemini 1206 and then Gemini Flash 2.0 and the agent Jules (am I the only one who keeps reading this Jarvis?) and Deep Research, and Veo, and Imagen 3, and Genie 2 all from Google. Meta’s Llama 3.3 dropped, claiming their 70B is now as good as the old 405B, and basically no one noticed. (more)

Childhood and Education Roundup #7 (more)

Zvi Mowshowitz: Housing Roundup #10. There’s more campaign talk about housing. The talk of needing more housing is highly welcome, as one prominent person after another (including Jerome Powell!) talking like a YIMBY. (more)

Baldur Bjarnason: 'The Intelligence Illusion (Second Edition): Why generative models are bad for business'. I’m publishing a second edition of my book The Intelligence Illusion (Second Edition): Why generative models are bad for business. (more)

Joe Procopio: Applicant Tracking Systems Are Crushing Job-Seekers’ Dreams. AI Automated Candidate Screening Is Turning Job Searches Into Dead Ends (more)

Jon Udell: Choosing When To Use (or Not Use) LLMs as a Developer. LLMs offer a level of augmentation that I wasn’t sure I’d live to see. They also bring an array of perils, many of which are ably documented in Baldur Bjarnason’s fiercely critical “The Intelligence Illusion,” including the one I’m addressing here: “We’re using the AI tools for cognitive assistance. This means that we are specifically using them to think less.” (more)
