Gopher
Gopher was a predecessor to the web. It was a giant World Wide Outline (OutLining). Unfortunately, it used straight unformatted text (would have been a good opportunity for SmartAscii), and images had to be in separate windows (though maybe that was more a client issue than a protocol rule).
