Shakuhachi
A shakuhachi (Japanese: 尺八, pronounced [ɕakɯhat͡ɕi]) is a Japanese longitudinal, end-blown flute that is made of bamboo. The bamboo end-blown flute now known as the shakuhachi was developed in Japan in the 16th century and is called the fuke shakuhachi (普化尺八)... The sound of the shakuhachi is also featured from time to time in electronica, pop and rock, especially after being commonly shipped as a "preset" instrument on various synthesizers and keyboards beginning in the 1980s.[32] The General MIDI standard assigns the shakuhachi to programm number 78. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shakuhachi
This bamboo flute sound is readily identifiable by the sudden upward pitch-bend at the end of the note. Experience it again on "Sledgehammer" from Peter Gabriel's So, "Yellowstone Park" from Tangerine Dream's Le Parc, "Love Is Stronger Than Pride" from Sade's Stronger Than Pride, "Wake up, Stop dreaming" from Wang Chung's To Live and Die in L.A., and Roger Waters' Radio KAOS, where it's actually singled out in the liner notes. The classic 80's shakuhachi sample was from an original EII disk "Loon Garden"...
