I think it makes more sense to have your Calendar plug-in in your EMail app than your Web Browser, because you want integration with your Address Book.
Jun'2009: integrating with Google Calendar (Data Synch via G Cal Daemon)

Apr'2007 post uses Provider for Data Synch.

Sept'2008 discussion of whether to use Provider or G Cal Daemon.

G Cal Daemon is cross platform and client independent, so it doesn't just work with Sunbird or Lightning. It is however definitely very tedious to try to use. I don't think it offers any advantage over using Provider for Google Calendar with Sunbird or Lightning, which in my experience thus far works transparently and flawlessly.

The difference is that G Cal Daemon works with a local copy of your calendar as an iCal (.ics) file. This local copy is synced with your Google calendars. Provider syncs your Google Calendars with lightning or sunbird. However, if you lose internet access and sync Lightning (I have not tried Sunbird) you lose your appointments from Lightning until you have your internet connection back. So, if you travel a lot, don't have 24 hour access, G Cal Daemon is a better bet. Hmm, is that a bad design, or a bad user behavior (synching while offline)?
