The real shame is that even now (I just confirmed this with Mozilla 1.0 yesterday - I couldn't run it reliably on my 64MB 2-year-old laptop, so I had to goose up the RAM) neither current leading newsgroup reader gives you a way to jump from a single message (e.g. news:mailman.1025936109.13412.python-list@python.org ) to the thread providing its context. Which, to my mind, makes it useless as Group Discussion Collaboration Ware.
