(2003-01-13) Teaching Girls Programming

Karen Stabiner on the challenges in getting females interested in programming computers. Intelligent, creative girls want to do larger-scale programs that actually do something. They don't want to look at a logarithm that deals with a math thing and how we're going to apply it. I think writing Social Software could provide many Stimulating Learning Projects, and would have lower frustration given current activing in scripting languages (e.g. Python), Open Source software (to grab code), and XML/RSS. (I think the problems tackled in most intro programming courses are boring to most males, as well.)
