competition between Cell Phone and Land Line operators.

Voice Mail doesn't work well, caller not satisfied, and no Meta Data.

NetMesh's Johannes Ernst Framing as Situational (not the same way others have referred to Situated Software) rather than Presence. He's talking about Meta Data of defining Context (granular status). And I think he's hoping that this richer metadata will support some automation of Presence's subtleties...
Rafe Needleman notes that attempting to have more subtle Presence gets doubly unmanageable when you have multiple protocols to define it over (Instant Messaging, Web Conferencing, etc.). I'd think maybe it makes sense to pick a single base protocol for contact initiation, then jump to other stuff. Jabber? (A questioner at the mike complained about lack of InterOp in Instant Messaging, and nobody mentioned Jabber!)
