(2006-03-04) Boyd Advisory Capital

Stowe Boyd rounds up some links/commentary around his idea of Advisory Capital as a new form of Venture Capital. I'm not sure how I feel about this...

  • this reminds me of various last DotCom-bubble activities: Professional Service Firm-s like PR and Law Firm-s taking equity as a big chunk of their fees; Vanity Incubator-s, etc.

  • I'm not sure how great the non-cash value has been that VC-s have delivered. Even (non-investment) contacts/connections are often vacuous.

  • but I think he's right that there's some kind of hole in the market. But, in a sense, we're almost talking about a part-time employee. And my Start Up experience says that if that's not grounded on some serious on-site time every bloody week then it's likely to be rather generic, rather than rooted in what's really going on at that moment in the Start Up's Life Cycle.
