(2007-08-25) Java Brand Vs Death
Jonathan Schwartz on why Sun Microsystems is changing its stock symbol to 'JAVA'.
Russell Beattie thinks that Java is obsolete (and thus not a great corporate Branding move). In fact, I'd say that many of today's current hot trends in programming are a direct result of a backlash against everything that Java has come to represent. (And he thinks the recent interest in Erlang is driven by seeking a Java replacement for complex business logic.)
Joe Gregorio is even more pessimistic. He thinks the cultural factors that Russell mentions mean that Java can't/won't be saved. And thinks that Schwartz's move will accelerate Java's demise.
