(2008-07-31) Hurt Retiring Later

Harry Hurt on Alicia Munnell's Working Longer book about deferring Retirement.

Stowe Boyd ponders the implications. Will retirees get into low-scale Agriculture (via Urban Farming, or moving out to cheaper land), in something like a CoOp model?

  • I Commented that growing food seems too physically strenuous. And if we're talking about people who spent their adult lives in Urban or Suburb environments, it doesn't smell like a great Culture fit. Nor maybe a good thing in terms of Carbon costs of anti-UrbanizatIon.

    • Stowe disagrees as to the difficulty of small-scale Family Farm work. For "rehirees" with time on their hands, converting a side yard into a pocket-sized farm might involve a few hours of beneficial work a day, with huge returns. Hmm, I know Stowe could do it, but even when she was 65 my mother wouldn't/couldn't have pulled this off.

    • He has a separate post about "free" home-grown food: fish in a barrel. Would also provide ongoing Stimulating Learning Projects.
