(2012-06-07) Michalski School Hidden Curriculum
Jerry Michalski gave a great talk on Schooling's "Hidden Curriculum".
- *The metronomone on the wall is more important than your Passion and Curiosity - now go to math.
- DeSchooling is about healing kids' curiosity. (Like post-ReligiousCult De Programming)
- In the future, Educating Kids will be just like how Educating Adults, or rather how Adults learn.
- If the child wants to learn, it only takes 100 hours to teach them Basic School Skills. If the child doesn't want to learn, no pushing will get good results. And pushing will only make them not want to more.
- The entire system is structured to create Artificial Scarcity.
- Project Based Learning: you can learn everything by learning about Coffee.
- When I see all this Maker tech, I say "make me 12 again".
- But Tech is not really the answer without changing other things. What's Disruptive is the re-allowance of Agency. We have Consumer-ized everything (not just ConsumerPackagedGoods (CPG), but HealthCare, Education, Politics...), made people NPC-s.
- Connecting learners to Meaning is the big win.
