ISBN

standard identifier for books

unfortunately each edition/version of a book gets a separate number, which means that 1 ISBN will go Out Of Print while another ISBN for the same book is still active - this can break a lot of automated processes

ISBN numbers changed Jan1'2005!

  • that means lots of human-generated URI links to books (in blogs, etc.) will break (unless the targets of those links, Amazon and Barnes And Noble, support both generations of values, which I suppose they will.)
