Open Cell Phone
Cell Phone/Mobile based on Open Source software, Open Standards
(The notes below are from before the iphone and android.)
Tux Phone is a DIY version that works on existing TelCo (GSM) carriers. http://www.opencellphone.org
Home Brew Mobile http://hbmobile.pronoiac.org/
What could the benefit be?
-
create better User Interface than the TelCo-s
-
add/integrate functions that the TelCo-s won't support
-
use P2P Mesh Network approach? 2005-06-09-OpenCellphone
-
why?
-
because sometimes is TelCo Infrastructure is over-loaded or broken (e.g. Hurricane Katrina)
-
to try and Route Around the TelCo pricing, at least enough to possibly create a little competition
- Bob Frankston: If we simply had 802.11 (WiFi) coverage connected to an abundant backbone the cellular industry would instantly cease to exist because it creates no value.
-
-
is this realistic?
-
does VoIP Over WiFi get you close to that?
