When he put the gun to my head at 16 I left home. I walked dark city streets littered with flashing lights and well filled hustler bars.

Thirty-six years or so have passed and I am sitting at a Macintosh writing this. I still don’t know how I got here and where I am going. I don’t feel bad about this. It is no longer necessary to know what is going to happen next. One day I will disappear in the same way I appeared. I do not know when, just like before. It will just happen. One day, I will be gone. Until then I will just keeping doing and being done to.

FOREWORD BY NICHOLAS THARCHER

In all of human history the essence of the independent mind has been the need to think and act according to standards from within, not without: to follow one’s own path, not that of the crowd. Inevitably, it follows that anyone with an independent mind must become, as the dictionary says, ‘one who resists or opposes an authority or established convention’: a rebel.

Rebels and Devils create. Sometimes the creations are labeled ‘beautiful’ and ‘good’ by others—whether the creations are inventions that make ‘our’ lives longer and easier, art ‘we’ admire, or leadership that produces ends ‘we’ approve of. More often these creations are initially seen as ‘bad’ and ‘dangerous’—inventions that take away ‘our’ jobs, art ‘we’ find offensive or dangerous, or leadership that results in mass murder ‘we’ disapprove of.

Some societies have been more clever than others in the effort to contain the Rebel: physically active people are ‘encouraged’ to become soldiers, police officers or professional athletes (i.e., entertainers); mystically inclined people become shamans or priests; artistically creative people are ‘patronized.’ The Rebel is thus made to feel dependent on the social structure; dependency breeds fear, and fear is control.

Way back in 1952 Robert Lindner, Ph.D., a noted clinical psychologist with a strong psychoanalytical background, boldly asserted that rebellion was instinctive and was the quintessence of the creative personality

Lindner viewed psychological symptoms as protests against the surrender of individuality

Dr. Lindner, a man of many heretical ideas, predicted that psychology and its associated disciplines would, in time, become handmaidens of the State and Big Business

Dr. Lindner became bolder, bordering, some would say, on the ridiculous and insane when he suggested that for humanity to reach its true potential, it had to overcome what Lindner termed the “triad of limitations,” namely, the effects of gravity, ignorance and mortality

Yes, Dr. Lindner, back in 1952 would have to be considered wacky when you consider the work and plight of Dr. Timothy Leary.

He was bold enough to provide us with a new morality to go along with his theory. Providing new moralities such as Reich’s “Love, Work and Knowledge Are The Well-Springs Of Life. Therefore They Should Also Govern It,” is alone sufficient to be charged with cultural and religious heresy.

Lindner’s morality: “Anything—thought or deed—which enables man to pierce the three-sided cage described as the triad of limitations, is intrinsically good: anything which prevents him from so doing is intrinsically bad.”

Below are some characteristics of constructive rebellion

Remember your priorities. Do not become distracted from your primary goals

it is necessary to remember and reinforce your priorities by energy regulation

There are four types of energy direction and two primary cycles.

First, there is energized enthusiasm which in turn is usually balanced by deep relaxation—the second type of energy. This cycle is the fundamental healthy, creative, rebellious ebb and flow of life. Third, there is deep tension and, fourth, agitated tiredness. These last two are the primary signs that the fundamental ebb and flow of life is disturbed.

If you feel agitated and tense remember to exercise or back off—focus on your priorities

The next quality is focus. Whatever priorities one has chosen, focus, determination and persistence are essential

Determination and persistence don’t mean agitated tension but the ability to continually focus on your primary goals, particularly on what you can do now to accomplish them

The fourth and final factor is practice. Whatever you are trying to accomplish, practice, practice, practice.

The key principle is that a good life in general, and successful rebellion in particular, are the result of oscillating on the energized enthusiasm and deep relaxation continuum. All other things in life have a higher probability of success if you are on the right energy cycle.

What exactly is a problem? To be expedient and effective, let’s assume there are two types of problems. The first really isn’t a problem at all: it is simply life happening. It is the slings and arrows

The second type of problem is the conceptual problem. A concept, by definition, is something conceived in the mind. They are ideas and mental constructs that serve to represent both real and nonexistent things.

Imaginary Problem 1: I am no good, I am bad, I am not good enough. Perceived Consequences: Abandonment, excommunication from the tribe, threatened survival, ceasing to exist.

Imaginary Problem 2: I can’t. Perceived Consequences: Shame, embarrassment, failure, loss of status, punishment

Imaginary Problem 3: I don’t wanna have to/it shouldn’t be like this. Perceived Consequences: Pain, effort, anticipatory anxiety, responsibility, work.

These are nothing more than complaints about reality not conforming to our own ideals—which are also concepts.

To stop being limited by your conceptual problems, not only must you identify them but you must also accept that at some level you believe in them.
