I should welcome almost any war, for I think this country needs one.

As Assistant Secretary of the Navy, Roosevelt prepared for and advocated war with Spain in 1898. He organized and helped command the 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry Regiment - the Rough Riders - during the Spanish American War.

Roosevelt also added the Roosevelt Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine, which stated that the United States and only the United States could intervene in Latin American affairs when corruption of governments made it necessary. Roosevelt's Foreign Policy is often referred to as the "BigStick" policy which was mainly in respect to Roosevelt's ideas of negotiation.
