I've never used a WebTV unit before, so it could suck more than I imagine. For me the dealkiller was its use of a modem and phone line for connectivity. This meant (a) a wire from the TV to a phone jack, which could be ugly, and (b) competing for dialtone.
I keep waiting for something like WebTV combined with a Cable Modem.
